Two Weeks Today

This is the view to the right from my veranda which faces west. I sit and watch the sunset.
This is the view towards the left. So now you see my skyline. The sky is almost always hazy and overcast. Alot of clouds now because of the rainy season, but also a lot of smoke, dust, and general smog.
My first Sunday here in the evening Abbe Oswald, Director of Caritas Goma, and I went to the home of his Aunt and Uncle. They wanted to give me a family welcome. We celebrated with a bottle of wine and good food. This is a photo i snapped as I was being driven from the UNWFP Headquarters. Thought you would to see the way people go shopping for everything from food to kleenex.
These are piles of Corn that has been ground into differing sizes. They are put in piles on tarps and you can buy as much as you like.
Well, that is a flash view of what you see as you ride through the streets of Goma. People everywhere and everyone on the go. Love to talk to you later, but now it is quitting time and everyone is leaving the offices. I feel obliged to do the same. Hope to do this again tomorrow. I have some more photos to show.

A View to My World

20 February, 2008

Finally I make a successful move to the internet and to our blog site. YAHOO!!! Does this sound like me? For sure it does, I am so happy and excited to be working here and meeting so many wonderful people. But I digress, today I wanted to show you just a little of my world here in Goma, Democratic Republic of Congo.

Here are a couple of pictures of my room at the Diocese of Goma Headquarters which sits high on the top of a hill. Above is the desk, chair and window which face west. The wooden piece you see in the right side is a double doored wooden cabinet with shelves, very large and good for most of my things. Just beside this table is the door which opens to a walkway/veranda on which I sit in the evenings.

The picture of the desk was taken from my bed, now this picture of my bed is taken from the table, so you can see a bit of the perspective. It is not huge, but accomodates me very well. What you cannot see is to the right of the bed in this picture is an area with a shower and sink. Never mind that the water does not flow. I am very happy to wash with wonderful warm water every morning for my shower. Staff who work here heat water for me every morning and of course as always I do enjoy my shower. The toilet is the room just beside mine so I do not have to venture far and the toilet does flush. A wonderful joy for me as well.

Now what else was that I wanted to show you....oh yes, the beautiful courtyard and some of the flowers outside the windows from my bed and bath side of the room.

Isn't that the most beautiful Azalea you have ever seen. They are also the biggest I have ever seen. Well, I really gotta run now. With God's good grace I can do this again tomorrow. Please keep posting. I am loving to read the comments. So nice to know you are there for me.

God Bless,
Jackie
